Player Profile Entering his sixth season (1997 through 2002) as coach of the Sluggers, Coach Tony is finally showing wear and tear from years afield.
Age and injury have slowed the once .600-plus leadoff hitter. Now he's streakier than a bachelor's window. Despite a hot start and finish to the 2001 campaign, a disheartening O-fer streak in the middle of the season left Skip with a horrendous .440 season average. What's more, he didn't have one extra-base hit in 2001. He does have two doubles so far in the 2002 season. Fortunately, his defense has improved, sort of. In the 2001 season, Skip led the team in assists and errors.
This is a contract year for Vinciguerra. If he doesn't find some consistency at the plate, he may be trade bait for a southpaw reliever.
According to a report by Peter Gammons on ESPN.com, Vinciguerra has been moonlighting with the Dynamo of the MIT League on Thursday nights. His streakiness showed there as well, according to Gammons. One team GM, who was interviewed on the grounds that he remain anonymous states that Vinciguerra went hitless for five games for the Dynamo before having a 3 for 4 game with a grand slam and 5 RBI. If this report is true, is this extra work helping or hurting Skip's overall performance? Only time will tell.
