StayWell battles Fourth Estate in scrimmage
What a fantastic game. The score is deceiving. We held them for six innings, but we were no match for the mighty bats of the State House Press.

I think this is the first game of the year where a StayWell employee is awarded MVP. How (or should I say "Howe"?) fitting that it be that employee's first game.

The MVP award goes to Peter "Howe'd You Like That?" for his offensive and defensive performances. He also wins the award for most new nicknames in one game.

    Offensive Notes

  • Peter also showed 'em how at home plate with a screaming three-run homer at his first at bat. Thanks to Peter, our team continues to average one home run per game. He also had a 2 RBI single in his next at-bat. His speedy base running earned him the second nickname Peter "Wheels and" Howe. Steve "Wheels" Baer has some competition in the speed department. And Howe.
  • Knowing that he had some serious action on the line, Kevin "Don't Call Me Pete Rose" Sullivan reached in every plate appearance with two singles, a walk, and an RBI. He also made sure to score two runs in hopes that we'd beat the spread. If we could just get him to hit more two-baggers, we could call him Kevin "Double Down" Sullivan. (Hit me.)
  • On a similar note, Craig "Trump Card" Trumm trumped up his stats. with a fantastic, stand-up triple, a single, and two runs in three at-bats.
  • Wendy hit like Wender Woman last night. She had three hits in three at-bats and an RBI. Her heads up base running helped her cross home plate twice.
  • Lisa "Don't Call Me Sussudio" Chiuchiolo reached at every at-bat with two singles, a walk, an RBI, and two runs. "O" Kay Jones was more than OK with two hits and an RBI in three plate appearances.
  • Michelle "Shocked" Fugere shocked the Fourth Estate with two walks giving her an on-base percentage of .667.
  • Dave "Spider-Man" Plunkett was definitely using his Spidey Sense[TM] when he placed a perfect RBI double.

    Defensive Notes

  • Until that last inning, our only fan, Lynn Whittemore witnessed some of our best fielding yet. Thanks for showing your support again, Lynn!
  • Craig "Trump Card" Trumm impressed us all with his soft glove and hard arm in right field. He made a perfect throw to the plate that was only a second too late.
  • Wendy "Wender Woman" Millard, "O" Kay Jones, and Michelle "Shocked" Fugere all played very well at second base. And Michelle didn't add to her bruise collection! Sorry, Michelle. Maybe next time.
  • Dave "Spider-Man" Plunkett continued his web-slinging ways at third base.
  • At first base Robert "Mr. Stretch" Orleman truly lived up to his name when he salvaged a bad throw by yours truly for one of the prettiest plays of the evening. I think he's an inch taller now.
  • In his first game of year, Peter "I'll Show You" Howe did just that in left field last night. His wheels, vacuum, and cannon are all welcome additions to our outfield. Lisa "The Rocket" Chiuchiolo pitched another great game even though she didn't have her favorite umpire, Joe, to help her out. She was forced to use the Government League Strike Board. Still, she struck out one batter, only walked one, and only let up one home run.

    THE BOTTOM LINE
Everyone had fun last night. Most importantly, our newest additions to the team, Kay and Peter, had a blast and played very well. I think we found two more Sluggers for next season. I'd better sign them now before they get swept up in the free agent market.

Also, playing a superior team like the State House Press only makes us better. You could see our fielding improve as the game went on (except for that last inning, of course, but I think that was sheer exhaustion) because we were playing against some fantastic hitters. We look forward to more of this fun--albeit difficult--practice.

    WILL THERE BE ANYMORE GAMES?
Yes. We are trying to schedule more scrimmages for some upcoming Monday nights. We may have a game or two on Wednesdays, too. I'll keep you posted.
