GAME WRAPUP

Although eight was enough to fill our lives with love from 1977 to 1981, Three-Dinger Dan Landesman's eight-RBI performance was not enough to fend off mad cow disease on August 3rd, 1999.

OFFENSIVE NOTES/GAME SUMMARY

Legend has it that Dan "Dinger" Landesman once hit three home runs in one game in 1997-two righty and one lefty. Since that legend has been passed on by word-of-mouth only, no one has been able to confirm it, and Dinger has not been able to repeat the performance.

Back to present day. Like Ken Griffey, Jr. drooling over the short right porch in Tiger Stadium, Three-Dinger Dan Landesman paid homage to the ever-present trees on the right field side of the Esplanade's infamous Field Two. Here's how it happened.

The top of the first was riddled with walks and Slugger errors. Luckily, the Mad Cows only scored one and stranded three runners. Feeling fortunate to only be down 1-0, the rusty Slugger defensive decided to get offensive. Teresa "The Terror" Murray intimidated commissioner/coach/pitcher, Mike "I Failed That" Testa, into walking her and Steve "Wheels" Baer. Then Bob "Otis" LeRoy reached on a fielder's choice. The stage was set for Dan "The Man" Landesman, whose four home runs in the previous seven games have all been 3-run jacks. It looked that easy for him to add a fifth.

Robert "Stretch" Orleman added to the first-inning damage by hitting a triple. Lisa "Car Wash" Chiuchiolo popped out to short, and owes Stretch big time for sliding like a Kamikaze pilot into home, giving Chiuchiolo a sac fly.

The second inning was more of the same. MDC hit back-to-back home runs off Chiuchiolo, who was woozy from looking at Orleman's open wounds, to bring in six more runs. The Sluggers answered by putting two more runners on base for Landesman's second at bat. Just like that, Dan "Dinger" Landesman had six three-run homers, and we were knotted at 7.

MDC added a solo shot in the fourth inning, and Bruce "Blue Jeans" Brauninger answered with an RBI double to score Wheels and tie it up again 8-8.

The Mad Cows answered with two in the fifth, and Sluggers again evened the score with three impressive singles in a row by Jim "I'm a" Freeman, Kristen "Killer" Smith, and Wendy "Wender Woman" Millard. Again, we were tied at 10-10.

MDC tacked on two more in the sixth with a double and two singles. In the bottom of the sixth, Wheels hit an impressive single to set the stage for Dan "The Man" Landesman, who hit his team-leading seventh long ball of the season. This was his first non-three-run homer of the season. After six innings, the game was tied for the fifth inning in a row-this time at 12-12.

In the top of the seventh, MDC stacked the bases and then cleared them with a triple to go up 15-12. This time, the spent Slugger offense could only answer with one single by Jim "Don't Call Me Friedman" Freeman, and the see-saw finally stopped. This time, the Sluggers came crashing to the ground as MDC stepped off of the see-saw first.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

Our defensive Player of the Game is Bruce "Blue Jeans" Brauninger for his outstanding performance at first base. First, he prevented Tony "Too High" Vinciguerra from overthrowing first by making a well-timed jump to save the ball and extra bases. Then he grabbed a miscue by Steve "Wheels" Baer in time to tag the runner on her way to first. Brauninger also dazzled us with his signature scoops to complete two more plays.

How about our starting first baseman? Robert "Stretch" Orleman was his usual slinky self in this contest, though his feet seemed to have a mind of their own. Here's one example. Feeling that he wasn't dirty or bloody enough, Stretch repeated his Kamikaze slide into home-this time on the defensive side-while trying to tag out a runner. He was unsuccessful, but his spirit rallied the team.

In order to continue his comparisons to Ken Griffey, Jr., Dan "The Man" Landesman showed his stuff in center field as well. He had six putouts, including one fantastic relay to third base for a painful tag on annoying commissioner, Mike "Too Much Pasta" Testa.

Craig "Trump Card" Trumm had three sweet catches in left, as did Jim "I'm a" Freeman. Teresa "The Terror" Murray and Steve "Wheels" Baer each had two putouts as well.

NEXT GAME

You haven't lived until you've experienced the StayWell-CRP rivalry. The undefeated CRP Health Club has a strangle hold on first place for the third year straight. Their record is 9-0. Two of those 9 wins are 9-8 decisions over StayWell. Wednesday, August 11 at 5:30 is payback time.
