GAME WRAPUP

The fireworks started long before the Fourth of July this year. The Shriners Hospital Fez came out strong with five runs in the first and seven runs in the second with most of their hits shooting over second base. With a 12-0 deficit facing them in the bottom of the second, the Sluggers lived up to their name batting around the order and cutting the lead to 12-9. Then silence fell over the Esplanade as Tamara "T Stop" Stanley made the adjustment. The Fez were only able to get two more runs in the last five innings as they futily continued hitting up the middle. T Stop knocked them all down like bowling pins.

Unfortunately, the Sluggers' bats got eerily quiet in the last five innings as well. The fans heard crickets chirping until Julie "Scotch Guard" Scotti knocked in Gene "Gene the Running Machine" for the Sluggers' final run in the third.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

On June 16, 1923, New York Yankees' starting first baseman, Wally "Ouch!" Pipp, sat out due to injury. He was replaced by a rookie from the minor leagues, named Lou "Iron Horse" Gehrig, who went on to play 2,130 consecutive games from 1923 to 1939.

On June 16, 1999, StayWell Sluggers' starting second basewoman, Michelle "Ball First, Base Second" Fugere, sat out due to injury. She was replaced by a rookie from the minor leagues named Tamara "T Stop" Stanley. How many consecutive games will Stanley play at second? Only time will tell.

Stanley earned the name "T Stop" during Wednesday's game when she had five putouts and three assists. She also figured into every out of the fourth and seventh innings. This performance made her the shoo-in Player of the Week.

Suffice to say that the Killer Ts were in effect Wednesday. The combination of Tamara "T Stop" Stanley at second, Tony "The Tiger" Vinciguerra at short, and Teresa "The Terror" Murray at the hot corner, made the infield a hitter's nightmare. The Killer Ts combined for 11 putouts. The scorebook reads like a game of hop scotch: 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 4-3, 5-4, 4-3, 8-4...

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the natural talent of Robert "Stretch" Orleman anchoring first base.

Lisa "Car Wash" Chiuchiolo was automatic as usual on the mound. In her second complete game, Chiuchiolo faced 41 batters, allowed only one walk, and struck out three--including back-to-back Ks to end the fifth inning. Chiuchiolo is also vying for a Gold Glove nomination as she figured into six outs on Wednesday.

Our outfielders were yawning after the first inning as the weak-batting Shriners rarely hit a ball past the infield dirt. To their credit, they remained focused and made the plays when they had to.

OFFENSIVE NOTES

Dan "Dinger" Landesman was at it again Wednesday. He hit his team-leading third three-run dinger of the season. Peter "How Consistent Are Ya?" went 3 for 3 with an RBI. Gene "Gene the Hitting Machine" went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Todd "Sparky" Conly went 2 for 2 with a walk, two RBI, and a run. Julie "Scotch Guard" Scotti smoked the ball on Wednesday, which earned her an RBI single and two hard line-outs.

Jerry Murphy, Teresa "The Terror" Murray, and Lisa "Car Wash" Chiuchiolo (she's automatic) also made good contact with a solid hit apiece.
