Loss: Chiuchiolo 0-3 GAME WRAPUP
The Sluggers jumped out to an early 4 to 1 lead thanks to a Todd "The Hit God" Conly RBI single, and a Peter "Howe Far Was It?" 3-run poke. And CRP's bleeding didn't stop there. After CRP was only able to get one run in the first, the Sluggers capitalized on two singles and two errors to cross the plate twice more in the second. The third inning held much of the same. This time the Sluggers capitalized on three singles, a sac fly by Gene "Gene the Hitting Machine" Fredey, and another CRP error to score two more runs.
Thanks to Lisa "Car Wash" Chiuchiolo's stellar performance on the mound, the CRP Crappers went in order in the third and fourth innings. The Sluggers' bats fell quiet in the fourth and fifth innings with three hits and no runs. The score hung at 8 to 1 like a John "Way Back" Wasdin curve ball.
Then CRP showed why they are two-time league champs when they came back with five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
The Sluggers were holding their one-run lead like an egg in the bottom of the seventh. When back-to-back doubles scored the tying run for the Crappers, the sell-out crowd for StayWell thought they were in for extra innings. Then with one out and a runner on third, the Sluggers put on their thinking caps and tried some good old-fashioned strategy. They intentionally walked CRP's hard-hitting, but slow running ringer (he hits like Mo, but he runs like Mo) to get a force at second in hopes of turning two to extend the game another inning. Unfortunately, a sacrifice fly to right ended the Sluggers' dream of being the first team to defeat CRP in over a year. For the second time in a row, StayWell has fallen to CRP by a score of 9 to 8.
DEFENSIVE NOTES
In her third complete game in a row, Lisa "Car Wash" Chiuchiolo (she's automatic) pitched another amazing game. She pitched back-to-back 1,2,3 innings, forcing CRP's best hitters to crap out and make easy pop-ups and grounders. She also caught a pop fly and covered first for two putouts and assisted on another. She remains the only pitcher in the league to hold the Crappers to one home run per game and fewer than 15 runs per game. In two complete games versus CRP, Chiuchiolo's ERA is lower than any pitcher's in the league. Her fearless, rhythmic pitching, coupled with her perfect defensive skills earn Chiuchiolo the Sluggers' Player of the Week award. See her photo and stats on our home page at the link below. Click on her photo to see her player profile and 1998 stats.
Other defensive standouts include last week's Player of the Week, Tamara "T-Stop" Stanley, who had two putouts. This includes her catch of a screaming line drive that literally knocked her over, but she held on for the critical final out of the fifth inning.
Jerry "I Need a Nickname" Murphy scooped up three pops like the Good Humor truck driver in right field. Murphy kept very busy as five of CRP's 12 hits went towards right field. Steve "Wheels" Baer came back from the DL with a vengeance this week. Wheels at short and Todd "The Stretch God" Conly at first put the Crappers down the crapper in order in the third and fourth innings going F3, 6-3, F6, F6, 3-1, and 6-3. They made six difficult outs look easy.
OFFENSIVE NOTES
Peter "Howe Consistent Are Ya?" loves playing CRP. In two games, he's gone 4 for 5 with three dingers, a single, and seven RBI. Howe's batting average can only be viewed through the Hubble space telescope. Gene "Gene the Whacking Machine" also likes taking on the Crappers (I said "taking *on* the Crappers.) In two games, he's three for four with a solo shot, two singles, a sac fly, two runs, and two RBI. Dan "The Man" Landesman upped his batting average by going two for three with a run. Our Player of the Week, Lisa "Car Wash" Chiuchiolo, added to her tremendous defense by hitting a sweet single to left allowing her to become the second of four Slugger runs in the first. Steve "Wheels" Baer, Jim "I'm a" Freeman, and Jerry "I'm Still Searching for a Nickname" Murphy each had a single with Freeman notching the final RBI for the Sluggers.
NEXT GAME
Catch the Sluggers next Tuesday, June 29th as they take on the MDC Mad Cows--a team the Sluggers defeated 10 to 4 on May 26th--at 5:30 on the Esplanade.
