GAME WRAPUP

After slumping in the month of June, the StayWell Sluggers turned around their three-game losing streak with a sound thrashing of the MDC Mad Cows.

It looked as though our fans who filled the bleachers were in for another a close battle in the first three innings. MDC scored once in the first. StayWell answered with two. MDC went in order in the second. StayWell tacked on two more to make it 4 to 1. After a scoreless third inning, the Mad Cows gave the Sluggers a scare when they came back to tie it in the fourth. But in the bottom of the fourth, the Mad Cows learned why they're called Sluggers. Fourteen hits and 12 runs later, the score was 16 to 4, good guys. MDC thought they would answer with five runs in the fifth, but the Sluggers weren't through yet. The Mad Cows' infield hleped by acting like cows out to pasture. With four singles and two doubles, StayWell crossed the plate six more times in the bottom of the fifth. StayWell sat the Mad Cows down in order again in the sixth, crushing MDC's hopes for a come back. Then they added one more run for good measure in the bottom of the sixth. The top of the seventh was business as usual with the Mad Cows wasting a lead-off double by sitting down 1,2,3 immediately following it.

At the mid-point of the season--just in time for the All Star Break--StayWell's record stands at 2 and 4 with six games remaining. Will the Mid-Summer Classic turn things around for the Sluggers? Stay tuned.

OFFENSIVE NOTES

Hitting his game-winning, team-leading, fourth three-run shot, (not to mention his defensive plays--see below) Dan "Dinger" Landesman earned his nickname, offensive play of the week, and a Player of the Week title. Dinger finished the day going 3 for 4 with 4 RBI. See Dinger's Player of the Week photo and stats at the "StayWell Sluggers home" link at the very bottom of this page. Click on his photo to see his online baseball card and 1998 stats.

Peter "Howe Did That Single Become a Double?" was up to his usual base-running antics. Blatantly blowing through the base coach's stop signs, Howe stretched two obvious singles into doubles, and scored at home with a picturesque slide. Vegas is taking bets on whether Peter "Howe Bloody Is My Leg?" will leave any of the Sluggers' six remaining games without a limp and several open wounds.

Gene "Gene the Hacking Machine" Fredey had another great day at the plate. Chopping out three hits with two RBI, Gene loves batting third. He also knows how to get on the coach's good side. He knocked in Skip twice in a row and expressed disappoinment when someone else did the honors in the fifth inning.

Jason "Shaq" Lefferts was back to his Mr. Perfect days of last year. He had an amazing 3 doubles as he went 4 for 4 with an RBI.

Wendy "Wender Woman" Millard and Robert "Stretch" Orleman obviously spent some time in the cages last week. They were 5 for 8 with two doubles and 3 RBI. In 1998, Stretch led the team in doubles with 7 two-baggers. He's well on his way with two in one game.

Teresa "The Terror" Murray had a fantastic 3 for 4 day, including two RBI singles.

Todd "The Hit God" Conly has pulled out of his early-season slump and added some much-needed left-handed consistency to the Sluggers' lineup. Batting second in the order, he went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

Chris "Co" Cornell had her first double as a Slugger, a walk, and an RBI.

Steve "Wheels" Baer must be commended for his patience as he took two walks. It wasn't easy, but he did the right thing.

Lisa "Car Wash" Chiuchiolo had a good game too with her third RBI single of the season and her first walk.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

Again we start with Dan "The Man" Landesman. He shagged 5 flies on the day, including one high jump that had the crowd on their edge of their seats and one running scoop that had the crowd on their feet. These defensive acrobatics combined with his offensive production, make him the outstanding pick for Player of the Week.

Chris "Co" Cornell cooked up a great game for herself on the mound. She threw her first complete game of the year, and it was a beauty. While facing 38 batters ChrisCo slipped up the Mad Cows by pitching them into two 1,2,3 innings and forcing the meat of their order into three easy pop outs in a row to end the game. She also allowed only 11 hits and 10 runs in seven innings. It was, overall, an impressive "W" for Cornell.

Jason "Pudge" Lefferts opened Skip's eyes in these 7 innings. His talent as catcher has gone unnoticed to this point. Let it be stated here that it will go unnoticed no more. Pudge was the centerpiece of the Slugger defense on Tuesday. He called a great game with Cornell. He kept up Cornell's timing by throwing the ball back to her right where she needed it. He cheered the defense incesently. He tried to make a close tag at the plate, but got a bad throw to work with. And ran right over the umpire, Red Man Joe, to chase a foul ball. Pudge has brought new life to the StayWell 1 spot.

Gene "Gene the Roaming Machine" Fredey enjoyed short field a little too much. He shagged 3 flies there, and added two more putouts to his numbers when Skip anchored him at first base.

Robert "Stretch" Orleman played up to his usual greatness at first base. He had 3 putouts on the day.

Peter "Howe Does a Smoker Run That Fast?" made 3 spectacular catches in left field.

Steve "Wheels" Baer showed his usual speed demon displays at short stop. He combined for 4 putouts and 3 assists.

Lisa "Car Wash" Chiuchiolo gets a tip of the cap with a putout, an assist, and no errors during her first complete game at second base. All this against a team that consistantly hit up the middle.

Teresa "The Terror" Murray is settling in nicely at third base. Though she didn't see much action from these back-through-the-box hitters, she still managed a great 5-3 play to cut the Mad Cows 4th inning rally short.

NEXT GAME

The Sluggers' next game is Tuesday, July 6th, immediately following the holiday, at 5:30 on the Esplanade. The Sluggers will be trying to avenge their opening day 10-8 loss to the Merrill Lynch Mob.
