GAME WRAPUP

The Sluggers started off with rusty defense, but came back with mighty bats to counter the Fez onslaught. Yet once again, the Sluggers ended up on the short end of a final-inning squeaker.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

This week's defensive player of the game and our Player of the Week, Michelle "Ball First, Base Second" Fugere had one assist and five putouts, including a 4-3 double-play, her first DP of the season and second of her career.

Peter "Howe Does a Smoker Run That Fast?" made us forget that Dan "Dinger" Landesman was out of the lineup with four nice catches in center field. Steve "Wheels" Baer was up to his usual magic with six assists and one putout at short. However, Wheels, Bob "Otis" LeRoy, and Jerry "I Need a Nickname" Murphy all had to contend with a brutal solar glare that is only matched by the 6:00 glare on the Mass. Pike. The sun reflecting off the Chuck and MGH had all the infielders reaching for their seeing-eye dogs and red and white sticks, which led to a lot of seeing-eye grounders and red faces. Fortunately, the scorekeeper was kind, and not too many sun-induced errors were scored on our permanent record.

OFFENSIVE NOTES

StayWell's four fans were treated to an impressive 15-run performance Wednesday. The Sluggers had a franchise-high nine doubles, thanks in part to our offensive player of the game, Gene "Gene the Hacking Machine" Fredey. The Machine went 4 for 4 with four runs scored, three doubles, and two RBI.

Todd "The Hit God" Conly continued his left-handed consistency going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Peter "Howe Consistent Are Ya?" went 3 for 3 with three RBI and a double. Having only crossed the plate once, it's a miracle that Howe left the field blood-free. However, our newest recruit, Bob "Otis" LeRoy continued Howe's baserunning legacy by sliding into first to avoid being doubled up. LeRoy is proud of his crimson badge of courage. He should also be proud of adding some much-needed left-handed power to the Slugger lineup. Otis went 4 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Teresa "The Terror" Murray was a terror at the plate. She intimidated her way into a 2 for 3 day, including an RBI single and a walk. Julie "Scotch Guard" Scotti made it stick with her two-RBI single in the 4th as part of her two for 3 effort. And our Player of the Week, Michelle "Shocked" Fugere dropped the jaws of the Fez with an RBI single, a walk, and a run scored. Steve "Wheels" Baer picked the perfect moment to step out of his slump and tie the game with a two-RBI double in the sixth. Jerry "I Still Need a Nickname" Murphy had a great day at the plate. He went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

NEXT GAME

See the Sluggers take on the Merrill Lynch Mob Tuesday, July 27 at 5:30 on the Esplanade. Look for the return of Shaq "Pudge" Lefferts at catcher and Chris "Co" Cornell on the mound as the Sluggers try to avenge their opening day 10-8 loss to the Mob.
