GAME WRAPUP

This game started off as a great defensive battle. The Sluggers and the Lynch Mob both played great defense throughout the game. Unlike all those great Bad News Bears movies, however, this time the good guys came up short offensively. What's worse is that the Lynch Mob lived up to their name by adding injuries to their insulting win.

DEFENSIVE NOTES

The best highlights of this game were the two double plays turned by the Sluggers, which is a team record. The first double play was a nice 1-6-3 by Jason "Shaq" Lefferts, Steve "Wheels" Baer, and Bruce "Blue Jeans" Brauninger. The second double play was even more fun to watch as Lisa "Car Wash" Chiuchiolo (she's automatic) caught a stinging liner at short field and then caught the runner leaving first with a perfectly placed throw to Brauninger.

Jason "Shaq" Lefferts had another impressive day on the mound. He pitched a 2K, no walk performance. He also had two putouts on the day.

Todd "The Glove God" Conly made an amazing, sprawling catch in short field in the early going (third inning). Unfortunately, Todd "The Poster Boy for UV Protection" Conly was blinded by the light on a high pop-up in the next inning. He took the ball stitches-first just above the eye. And took four stitches in the same spot at MGH later--much later--that night.

Another injury occurred in the fifth inning when Peter "Howe Does a Smoker Run That Fast?" reinjured his hamstring yet again legging out a vital single that resulted in the Sluggers' first run. Peter "Howe's Your Hamstring?" will be out of town next week, resting said muscle so he can be in top form for the Sluggers final two games of the millenium.

The Sluggers' newest addition, Bob "Otis" LeRoy gave an impressive performance in right field Tuesday night. He made two spectacular catches that wowed the overflowing Slugger bench.

OFFENSIVE NOTES

Our Player of the Week is the wakened giant, Robert "Stretch" Orleman, who hit his first HR of the season. This two-run jack was his second career dinger in a Slugger uniform.

Dan "3BD" Landesman reminded us why we call him Three-Bagger Dan when he hit yet another triple to score the first Slugger run of the game and stop everyone's bleeding except Todd "Scar Face" Conly's.

NEXT GAME

The Sluggers' next appearance is against the MDC Mad Cows, Tuesday, August 3rd at 5:30 on the Esplanade.
