"Maura's our second rookie recruit for the '99 season," Coach Tony said. "It's
been a long hard arbitration period. M. Fredey wanted a contract that was simply
riddled with incentive clauses." One incentive she wanted that the StayWell
organization just wasn't able to provide was an all expenses paid trip to Disney
On Ice in Paris. "I love the French interpretive dance that Mickey and Donald
perform there," Fredey said. "And Pluto is a such a master performer. I try to
emulate his gracefulness on the field."
"We just weren't able to make a sacrifice like that," Coach Tony said. "I'm glad
we were able to finally reach an agreement though."
The team skipper is referring to a three-year, $300,000 contract, which is the
most for a rookie in this league. "Fredey's shown us a work ethic that's
unprecedented in rookies this day in age," the coach said.
"We're looking for Fredey to be our new lead-off hitter. This should get her
more comfortable with facing big league pitchers since she hates batting under
pressure. If she makes consistent contact every game, the bonus clause of her
contract goes into effect. A year's supply of Yanni CDs will be delivered to her
door the day after the season ends." "I've always been a big fan of his work,"
Fredey said. "I'm hoping I can lull the Slugger fans to sleep with my hypnotic
glove work the way Yanni puts his listeners to sleep."
Also, Altoids Mints offered M. Fredey an endorsement contract in which she must
use the phrase "curiously strong" in every press conference.
"I'm just anxious to get started with the season," Fredey said. "I'm hitting the
weight room every day. I want to be curiously strong at the plate and curiously
strong in the field. I'm working all the major muscle groups used in
softball--my deltoids, quadriceps, and especially my altoids. Before you know
it, they'll be calling me the curiously strong rookie."
