Sluggers Game Summary
STATE STREET
July 31

Sluggers Sweep State Street 23-3
Sluggers break it open with back-to-back-to-back homers in the first and never look back.

Who says the fireworks have to end after July 4th? The Sluggers kept the bombs blasting until the very last day in July. They dialed long distance six times in all en route to routing State Street Bank. In so doing, the Sluggers completed the season sweep of State Street. The Green and White now own a 3 and 1 record versus last yearâs expansion team. This is their second season-sweeping game in as many weeks. On July 24th, the Sluggers swept this yearâs expansion team, Time Warner.

Defensive Player of the Game
With Robert ãStretchä Orleman on a minor league rehab assignment, Brian Wightman ãCanât Jumpä got his first win of the season as he spun a beauty on the mound. The Slugger offense made his task very easy, staking him to a 3-2 lead in the first. And Wightman never relented that lead as he lived up to the junk-ball pitcher reputation that he earned in Single A ball. He mixed it up with nasty breaking stuff, in particular a 12 to 6 hook that literally falls off the table in the strike zone.

If that werenât devastating enough, pitching coach, Lisa ãQ-Loä Chiuchiolo taught Wightman a new pitch during Spring Training. Itâs not quite a slider, and itâs not quite a knuckle ball. Chiuchiolo calls it a ãslucklerä. Note the grip Wightman uses on this pitch.

Other Fancy Glove Work
Tamara ãT-Stopä Stanley reminded us how her nickname came to be when she knocked down a hard liner up the middle, which also knocked her down. As Slugger fans have come to expect, T-Stop kept the ball in front of her and prevented any further State Streeters from seeing third base.

Also, Isaac ãThe Tool Manä Taylor is getting comfortable as a backstop He erased his third runner of the year at the plate Tuesday.

Offensive Notes
Back-to-back-to-back home runs, yes three home runs in a row, by George ãThe Hit Manä Hart, Will ãThe Naturalä Jamieson, and Dan ãDingerä Landesman in the bottom of the first frame really set the tone for this one.

How much offensive power did the Sluggers produce?

Exhibit A: Aaron ãPenguinä Mathieu, Will ãThe Naturalä Jamieson, and Dan ãDingerä Landesman all came just a triple shy of the cycle.

Exhibit B: Mathieu, Jamieson, Landesman, Matt ãI Need a New Nicknameä Hunt, Michelle ãBall First, Base Secondä Zoltowski, and Isaac ãThe Tool Manä Taylor all batted 1.000 on the day.

Exhibit C: Isaac ãThe Tool Manä Taylor, graduated Cum Laude from the Peter ãHoweâs That for Breaking Up a Double Play?ä school of base running. Unfortunately, Taylor paid the price.

Offensive Player of the Week
Will ãThe Naturalä Jamieson had his best game yet in a Slugger uniform. Going 4 for 4 with a double and two long balls, not to mention 3 RBI, Jamieson may be the first player since Fred Lynn to win both Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in the same season. Jamiesonâs two home runs place him on top in the home run race.

Player of the Week
Aaron ãPenguinä Mathieu eked out Player of the Week honors over Jamieson, Landesman, and Zoltowski by going yard twice in his 3 for 3 day. He also hit a double and had four RBI in the 12 hole. See Mathieuâs Player of the Week stats here.

Mathieu is now an insane 9 for 10 with 8 RBI on the season in just five games played. His three home runs and one double give him an ungodly 1.900 slugging percentage, and his two walks factor largely in his .917 on-base percentage. All of these stats lead the team. However, since he has played in only five of the eight games that the Sluggers have started, his stats are not award worthy until he has played in both of the final two games of the Slugger season.

The difference in the PoTW voting came with Mathieuâs fancy glove work as a short fielder. He had four putouts, including two nice running catches of sinking liners. His sure glove in the outfield helped rookie pitcher, Brian Wightman ãCanât Jumpä keep his cool and breeze through the rest of the State Street lineup.

Next Game
The Sluggers play the middle game of their three-game, season-ending home stand as they take on the Charles River Park Health Club Crappers, Wednesday, August 8th at 5:30 on Field 1 of the Esplanade. All fans receive a free beer at the Red Hat after the game.
