Sluggers sweep Fez with 24-8 win to lock up playoff spot

--BOSTON, August 13, 2002

The Sluggers are now tied for first place with the idle AOL Time Warner Conglomerates.

Offensive Play of the Game
This week’s Offensive Play of the Game occurred with one out of the bottom of the second inning and the bases loaded. See the Player of the Week section below for details.

Other Offensive Highlights

These Sluggers batted 1.000 today:

Defensive Play of the Game
This week’s Defensive Play of the Game occurred in the top of the fifth inning with one out. “Bouncy” (as the official scorer called her) hit a dribbler down the first base line. Though he was obviously distracted by Bouncy’s bouncies, Craig “Trump Card” Trumm kept his composure enough to get the unassisted out that squashed any hopes the Shriners had of mounting a comeback.

Honorable Mention
The Shriners Fez are known for the patience at the plate. In fact, several of their players need to put solvent on the shoulders as they leave the batter’s box to unglue the bat from their uniform. Even know many Fez were hoping to generate a rally by getting on base via the base on balls, Brian “Wightman Can’t Jump” kept them off balance by mixing up all of his pitches. For the sixth time this season, he didn’t walk a single batter.

Teddy Points
After each game, at the Red Hat, Ted “Ballgame” Johnson hands out points given for the little things that don’t show up in the box score but still contribute greatly to the team’s success. Here’s what Johnson had to say after the game:

“I’d like to remind everyone that the player to finish the season with the most cumulative Teddy Points wins dinner for two in the North End. And remember, I double all Teddy Points earned against CRP. Now for this week’s award.

“I will issue Teddy Points for tonight’s 16-run win soon. I promise. Unfortunately, I’m too drunk right now.”

Stats from the Maniacal One
Here are this week’s off-beat stats from the Maniacal One:

  • Cheap Eats: The Sluggers walked six times tonight. Two of those were RBI walks.
  • Cheap Eats: Wightman held the Shriners to just one extra-base hit--a home run in the sixth inning by “Lefty Alex,” as the official scorer called him.
  • Give a Little, Take a Lot: Sluggers pitchers have allowed seven home runs this season. Sluggers bats have beared 18 home runs this season.
  • Grab a Little Extra: Sluggers had ten extra-base hits--five doubles, two triples, and three home runs.
  • You Greedy sLOB: The Sluggers had seven runners left on base (LOB); the Shriners left eight.
  • Stick a Few in Your Pocket: The Sluggers have scored 132 runs in their nine games this season, more than any team in the league. (The Crappers have scored 100 runs in eight of their nine games this season--the June 19 game’s score remains undisclosed. The AOL Time Warner Conglomerates have scored 107 runs in nine games this season. This includes the July 9 game, in which they ran up the score to 52-2 against the 0-9 Shriners Fez.)

Player of the Week
Normally the Player of the Week award is given to a player who displays outstanding offense and defense, but this week the committee picked a player who, while not getting many defensive chances, displayed such awe-inspiring offense that the committee just couldn't ignore this candidate.

Landesman was giving a clinic at the plate. He went 3 for 3 with two home runs, six RBI, and three runs scored. He also made Slugger history.

In the bottom of the second inning, Tony “Skip” Vinciguerra and George “The Hit Man” Hart (the number one and two hitters) each hit singles. Will “The Natural” Jamiesonshowed rare patience at the plate by working a walk to load the bases. Dan “Dinger” Landesman then made yet another mark on Sluggers history by hitting the first grand slam ever in a Sluggers game (for or against the Sluggers).

“That’s exactly how I drew it up when I made up the lineup card,” Coach Tony said after the game. “Unfortunately, Jamieson has been swinging for the fences all season long. He hasn’t let Landesman dial long distance with men on base.”

When asked about his historic homer, the modest Landesman said, “Sure, I hit the long ball, but it wouldn’t have meant a thing if no one got on base in front of me. I love hitting with ducks on the pond.”

Robert Orleman was heard to remark, “I hate batting after Dinger. There’s never anyone left of base for me to drive in.”

See Landesman’s Player of the Week photo here.

In the Running
Many of the Player of the Week committee gave Lisa “Car Wash” Robertsfirst place votes. Landesman squeaked by her by just two votes. Most notably, in the bottom of the sixth inning, with a runner on second, Roberts slugged a frozen rope over the left fielder's head for her first career triple and to drive in her second run of the day. She finished the day 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored. Like Landesman, Roberts didn't have many chances to show off her much-improved glove work in this contest.

During the post-game handshake, most of the Fez complemented Roberts on her power display. Alex, the Shriners left fielder and the only Fez to hit a homer against the Sluggers this year, told Roberts that he was playing her deep because he knew that she could hit, but he never expected her to hit it over his head.

Brian “Wightman Can’t Jump” also received several votes from the PotW committee. He went 2 for 2 with a single, a double, a walk, and four RBI. He also continued his stellar pitching performance.
