Mad Cows Lay Down on Sluggers

After 14-6 loss, Sluggers finish season in second place

--BOSTON, August 20, 2002

Clemency was never the MDC Mad Cows’ strong suit. Rather than laying down like cows in the rain to let the Sluggers hold onto first place, the Mad Cows stampeded over the Sluggers with seven runs in the seventh inning to scratch, claw, and hoof their way into the playoffs.

Around the League
This all makes for a great upcoming week. See the full league schedule at the bottom of this page.

MDC is 5-1 since the All-Star break.

CRP is 2-4 since the Fourth of July. The rest of the league sends a big thanks to Keith Lockhart and the rest of the Boston Pops. CRP hasn’t lost four games in any two seasons combined in the history of the league.

The Shriners Fez have fallen from grace. Last year they knocked the Sluggers out of the playoffs and played in the championship game only to lose to CRP. This year, they finish with an 0-10 record.

Fidelity just missed making the playoffs in their first year.

Offensive Play of the Game
This week’s Offensive Play of the Game occurred with Aaron “Penguin” Mathieu standing at first base and the Mad Cow outfielders drawn in for Tamara “T Stop” Stanley. Stanley laced a double over the outfielders for a stand-up double that easily scored the speedy Mathieu all the way from first base.

“T Stop can really whack the ball, which you can’t anticipate from her sleek build,” said bench coach, Dan “Dinger” Landesman after the game. “She has the surprise factor on the opposition. Even if they did play her deep, she’s famous for dropping it in front of the outfielders for an easy single.”

Other Offensive Highlights
Will “The Natural” Jamieson hit his team-leading seventh long ball in the first inning to score Tony “Skip” Vinciguerra, who started off the inning with a double.

These Sluggers batted 1.000 today:

Defensive Play of the Game
This week’s Defensive Play of the Game occurred in the top of the fourth inning. With one run in and a runner on first, Mike “The Commish” Testa dropped a blooper into shallow right, but Noah “n$” Cushing was there like cheese on nachos with a running underhanded scoop catch that brought the vociferous Sluggers fans to their feet.

Noah is a busker,” Isaac “Pudge” Taylor said after the game. “He keeps the bench alive during those slow times, and you can always count on him for a clutch defensive play.”

Teddy Points
After each game, at the Red Hat, Ted “Ballgame” Johnson hands out points given for the little things that don’t show up in the box score but still contribute greatly to the team’s success. Here’s what Johnson had to say after the game:

“I’d like to remind everyone that the player to finish the season with the most cumulative Teddy Points wins dinner for two in the North End. And remember, I double all Teddy Points earned against CRP. Now for this week’s award.

“There were no Teddy Points issued this week, but remember Teddy Points are doubled against CRP, who we play in the first round of the playoffs next Tuesday. This is probably everyone’s last chance to catch the current leader, Will [“The Natural” Jamieson].”

Stats from the Maniacal One
Here are this week’s off-beat stats from the Maniacal One:

  • Something Extra: The Sluggers had five extra-base hits--three doubles and two home runs.
  • You’re a sLOB: The Sluggers had nine runners left on base (LOB); the Mad Cows left seven.

Player of the Week
Aaron “Penguin” Mathieu has been shining in the latter part of the season. Tonight he had a nice catch in shallow right field to end the top of the second inning, stranding “GI Joe” (as the official scorer called him) on second base, temporarily preserving the Sluggers’ 4-1 lead.

Mathieu then led off the bottom of the second inning by homering for the second time in three games. This homer was an end of the bat cue shot that found the gap in right center and rolled like a cabbie through a red light.

Mathieu finished the night going 2 for 2 with a single, a homer, two runs scored, and an RBI.

See Mathieu’s Player of the Week stats and photo here.

In the Running
Tamara “T Stop” Stanley went 2 for 2 with a single and an RBI double over the drawn in outfielders’ heads in the sixth inning to drive in Aaron “Penguin” Mathieu, who had lead off the inning with a single.

Injury Report
Matt “The Rock” Ronzio (right knee) was sent to Shriners Hospital with a contusion in his right knee suffered in 12-9 loss to Fidelity on July 16. Ronzio’s super agent, Megan Desmond told reporters that “The Rock is just fine. The millions... and millions of The Rock’s fans will not be disappointed by his performance when he returns. In fact, they will see the most electrifying move in sports entertainment today. Do you smelllalalala what The Rock.... is cooking? Know your role and shut your mouth, Jabronie.”

Ronzio may be sent down to the Sluggers’ Triple-A affiliate Brockton Rox for a brief rehab assignment. While there, he will be asked to seek psychological counseling.

Kristen “Killer” Smith (whirling sensation) has been experiencing dizzy spells of late. Smith is listed as day-to-day.

The Rumor Mill
A source close to the discussions tells this reporter that the New England Revolution are trying to buy Aaron “Penguin” Mathieu’s contract from the Sluggers. Mathieu is in his second full season with the Sluggers. He has two years remaining on his contract with a reported $4.7 million due. Mathieu makes no bones about having soccer as a first love. “Unfortunately, co-ed softball pays a lot better,” he said during a post-game interview. “I used to be a science teacher, but that wasn’t paying enough to cover the gas I needed to get to school.”

Quotes of the Week

Next Game
On to the playoffs! In the next Sluggers contest, the league’s biggest rivals go head-to-head as the second place Sluggers host the third place CRP Crappers Tuesday, August 27 on Field 2 at 6:00. The winner goes on to the championship game on Wednesday, August 28. The so called “experts” in Vegas have the Crappers favored by 3¼ runs. What those “experts” don’t know is that the Sluggers thrive off of being underdogs.
